Microplastics in Your Tea?

Are MICROPLASTICS lurking in your TEA?

Nanoplastic in pyramid tea bags

Tea is a clean, healthy option to start your day, wind-down, or just because. Discerning consumers even opt to source Organic and Fair Trade tea. This ensures their own family’s health and that of the hard-working farmers.

However, if your favourite tea comes in a triangle “silky” pyramid bag, you may be getting more than you expected. It has long been known that these bags are of GMO-origin and are not back-yard compostable. But it doesn’t stop there. Researchers at McGill University in CANADA found that a single bag releases around 11.6 billion microplastic particles, and 3.1 billion even smaller nanoplastic particles, into the cup; this is thousands of times higher than the amount of plastic previously found in other food and drink. Environmental Science and Technology, an academic journal, has since published these findings. It has also been reported on in over 135 media articles, including Newsweek and CNN.

Unlike the tea referred to in the report, NUMI ORGANIC TEA has understood the potential health risks of steeping chemicals in hot water since day one. It’s why Numi has always used organic, real herbs, fruits and flowers in all of their tea blends and steered clear of compromised packaging choices. As stated by Numi:

“We will never cut corners or settle for anything less than the purest cup of tea and we remain committed to help companies take meaningful steps to reverse climate change and proactively find better packaging solutions for our industry through our leadership role on the OSC2 Climate Collaborative. Like their tea, Numi’s tea bags are made from ingredients you can trust.”

Numi Organic Tea uses biodegradable, unbleached Manila hemp fibre—not plastic like the tea bags studied in the microplastics report. NUMI tea bags are Non-GMO verified, meet the highest standards for safety in the EU (which goes way beyond the US’s FDA standards) and will degrade over time in a normal compost heap.
